Nature Weaving Loom

Nature Weaving Loom

Remember when we learned how to make square lashings and used that skill to make gorgeous stick picture frames? Well, we are going to use that skill again today to create a weaving loom. If you did not make the picture frames or have forgotten how, head over to that post and follow the instructions there to build the frame, then come back here to finish the loom.

Nature Weaving Loom

You will need:

  • four sticks
  • string
  • scissors
  • natural materials to weave

When you head out for a walk today try to collect items to weave on to your loom. What sorts of items will you need? What sort of shape will work well for weaving? What sorts of textures and colours will you find/choose? Also, choose your four sticks on the walk. When you have all of your treasures head back home.

Create the frame for your weaving loom by following the instructions for how to make a stick picture frame. For our littlest friends you may need to support them in making the loom but then set them free for the weaving.

Now tie the end of your string on the bottom right-hand corner of your loom. Pull the string taught and bring it up to the top stick. Wrap it twice to keep the tension in the string. Bring it back to the bottom and wrap it twice down there before bringing it up to the top again, wrapping it twice, etc. Continue in this way along the entire length of the frame. It should look something like this.

You can now start weaving your natural items on. Try to weave over, under, over, under with one and then with the next item weave the opposite way (under, over, under, over).

Let us know how you get on. Show us what you chose. Share your photos with us on Facebooktwitter and/or instagram.

Happy weaving!
