Shadow Drawing

Shadow Drawing

This idea can be as big or as small as you like. It is fun to do with someone else and it will work on any day that you can see your shadow.

Shadow Drawing

You will need:

  • a space to draw chalk onto (outside)
  • a sunny day
  • at least two people
  • sidewalk chalk

And/or:

  • paper
  • small items to create a shadow
  • pens/pencils to draw

You can either set up your items on the edge of your paper so the shadows are falling on your paper or set up yourself so that your shadow falls on the drawing surface.

Then, trace away! Trace the outline of your shadows onto the paper or the ground. Mark where you laid your paper or leave it there and come back to trace the shadow again in a few hours. What do you notice? Has your shadow changed? If so, how? Why do you have a shadow? Why does it change as time passes?

For older children, have them trace themselves and set them the challenge to draw key organs onto their shadow. Where is your liver? Your stomach, your heart?

Do let us know how you get on. We would love to hear from you on Facebooktwitter and/or instagram.

Happy tracing!

April
